Narrative:
En route from iad to lax we were rerouted because of WX. The original clearance was fam to fsm to irw. By mistake we left out fsm when we received the rerte. After passing fam the center called us and told us we would have to go at least as far south as rzc to clear the area of WX ahead. We told him that we thought the original rerte we'd received would keep us clear of all the WX. He replied, he showed our clearance as I previously stated. We then realized that we had omitted fsm when programming the INS. When using INS our company has strict procedures on its use. We neglected some of these procedures because we were not overwater. Had we followed them this would not have happened. I believe that flight crews do this all the time, knowing that it is just as critical, whether over land or water. They get a false sense of security because they are overland and skip procedures pertaining to the INS.

Title: HEADING TRACK DEVIATION.
Narrative: ENRTE FROM IAD TO LAX WE WERE REROUTED BECAUSE OF WX. THE ORIGINAL CLRNC WAS FAM TO FSM TO IRW. BY MISTAKE WE LEFT OUT FSM WHEN WE RECEIVED THE RERTE. AFTER PASSING FAM THE CENTER CALLED US AND TOLD US WE WOULD HAVE TO GO AT LEAST AS FAR S AS RZC TO CLR THE AREA OF WX AHEAD. WE TOLD HIM THAT WE THOUGHT THE ORIGINAL RERTE WE'D RECEIVED WOULD KEEP US CLR OF ALL THE WX. HE REPLIED, HE SHOWED OUR CLRNC AS I PREVIOUSLY STATED. WE THEN REALIZED THAT WE HAD OMITTED FSM WHEN PROGRAMMING THE INS. WHEN USING INS OUR COMPANY HAS STRICT PROCS ON ITS USE. WE NEGLECTED SOME OF THESE PROCS BECAUSE WE WERE NOT OVERWATER. HAD WE FOLLOWED THEM THIS WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED. I BELIEVE THAT FLT CREWS DO THIS ALL THE TIME, KNOWING THAT IT IS JUST AS CRITICAL, WHETHER OVER LAND OR WATER. THEY GET A FALSE SENSE OF SECURITY BECAUSE THEY ARE OVERLAND AND SKIP PROCS PERTAINING TO THE INS.
