Narrative:
At mke clrd for landing on runway 7L. I landed on runway 7R. I was unfamiliar with airport. Advised of traffic by approach; listened to ATIS. WX was clear and unrestricted visibility. My flight was from the southwest RNAV direct from mli. An small transport, above and behind me, was landing runway 7R. I thought I was told, after advising I had him in sight, to follow. The small transport overtook my aircraft descended and landed runway 7R, turned off runway 7R. I followed him to runway 7R and touched down after he cleared runway 7R. An air carrier waited for my landing. No unsafe condition occurred but the confusion could have caused an unsafe condition. At no time did tower advise I was lined up for the wrong runway. After landing I was told I was cleared to land runway 7L not runway 7R.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PLT OF SMA LANDED MKE 7R WHEN CLEARED TO LAND 7L.
Narrative: AT MKE CLRD FOR LNDG ON RWY 7L. I LANDED ON RWY 7R. I WAS UNFAMILIAR WITH ARPT. ADVISED OF TFC BY APCH; LISTENED TO ATIS. WX WAS CLR AND UNRESTRICTED VISIBILITY. MY FLT WAS FROM THE SW RNAV DIRECT FROM MLI. AN SMT, ABOVE AND BEHIND ME, WAS LNDG RWY 7R. I THOUGHT I WAS TOLD, AFTER ADVISING I HAD HIM IN SIGHT, TO FOLLOW. THE SMT OVERTOOK MY ACFT DSNDED AND LANDED RWY 7R, TURNED OFF RWY 7R. I FOLLOWED HIM TO RWY 7R AND TOUCHED DOWN AFTER HE CLRED RWY 7R. AN AIR CARRIER WAITED FOR MY LNDG. NO UNSAFE CONDITION OCCURRED BUT THE CONFUSION COULD HAVE CAUSED AN UNSAFE CONDITION. AT NO TIME DID TWR ADVISE I WAS LINED UP FOR THE WRONG RWY. AFTER LNDG I WAS TOLD I WAS CLRED TO LAND RWY 7L NOT RWY 7R.
