Narrative:
ATC turned us on to the roslyn lda runway 18 approach at national airport with instructions to cross 'maudy' intersection at 3000'. When we heard 'maudy' intersection we suddenly realized we were looking at the wrong approach plate and scrambled to find the correct one. It was a hazy morning with light, thin fog shrouding the river banks. To make matters worse, the sun was low on the horizon further bleachin out the visibility picture. At the 3.5 DME fix we were still struggling to get a definite visibility fix on runway 18. By the time we began a turn to follow the river, we had already xed high rise buildings south of the approach path and penetrated an acute noise sensitive area. The overriding cause of this incursion was a failure to identify the proper approach plate and complete an approach chart briefing. The approach in use was clearly stated on the ATIS broadcast. Unfortunately, I have been neglecting approach briefing when reported conditions at the airport are VFR. The marginal visibility conditions actually encountered distracted us at a critical time.

Title: FLT CREW OF MLG FOLLOW IMPROPER LDA APCH TO DCA UNTIL A CROSSING ALT AT MAUDY MADE THEM AWARE THEY WERE ON THE WRONG CHART.
Narrative: ATC TURNED US ON TO THE ROSLYN LDA RWY 18 APCH AT NATIONAL ARPT WITH INSTRUCTIONS TO CROSS 'MAUDY' INTXN AT 3000'. WHEN WE HEARD 'MAUDY' INTXN WE SUDDENLY REALIZED WE WERE LOOKING AT THE WRONG APCH PLATE AND SCRAMBLED TO FIND THE CORRECT ONE. IT WAS A HAZY MORNING WITH LIGHT, THIN FOG SHROUDING THE RIVER BANKS. TO MAKE MATTERS WORSE, THE SUN WAS LOW ON THE HORIZON FURTHER BLEACHIN OUT THE VIS PICTURE. AT THE 3.5 DME FIX WE WERE STILL STRUGGLING TO GET A DEFINITE VIS FIX ON RWY 18. BY THE TIME WE BEGAN A TURN TO FOLLOW THE RIVER, WE HAD ALREADY XED HIGH RISE BUILDINGS S OF THE APCH PATH AND PENETRATED AN ACUTE NOISE SENSITIVE AREA. THE OVERRIDING CAUSE OF THIS INCURSION WAS A FAILURE TO IDENT THE PROPER APCH PLATE AND COMPLETE AN APCH CHART BRIEFING. THE APCH IN USE WAS CLRLY STATED ON THE ATIS BROADCAST. UNFORTUNATELY, I HAVE BEEN NEGLECTING APCH BRIEFING WHEN RPTED CONDITIONS AT THE ARPT ARE VFR. THE MARGINAL VIS CONDITIONS ACTUALLY ENCOUNTERED DISTRACTED US AT A CRITICAL TIME.
