Narrative:
Our flight, air carrier xx, after being cleared to cross runway 12R, was informed that we were to follow another company medium large transport for takeoff on 12L. The medium large transport that we were to follow was #2 for takeoff on runway 12L, making us #3 for takeoff. With the medium large transport ahead of us on the roll for takeoff we, flight XXX, answered the tower by stating that 'company XXX position and hold.' after checking for landing traffic, we went into position, only to be informed we were not cleared into the runway. We simply turned to the left and taxied clear. No dangerous evasive action was required. Looking back, I believe the position and hold clearance was meant for a company commuter that was parallel to our taxiway on runway 06. I am not sure if the controller used our call sign or not, but we were set to follow the medium large transport in front of us because we were told our sequence was behind the company medium large transport. Supplemental information from acn 148584: if the problem wasn't that the controller had cleared us when he meant someone else the only other explanation we could figure was that since we were responding to each other's commands in response to the checklist we did not hear the call sign correctly and responded to someone else's clearance.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR MLG UNAUTH RWY ENTRY.
Narrative: OUR FLT, ACR XX, AFTER BEING CLRED TO CROSS RWY 12R, WAS INFORMED THAT WE WERE TO FOLLOW ANOTHER COMPANY MLG FOR TKOF ON 12L. THE MLG THAT WE WERE TO FOLLOW WAS #2 FOR TKOF ON RWY 12L, MAKING US #3 FOR TKOF. WITH THE MLG AHEAD OF US ON THE ROLL FOR TKOF WE, FLT XXX, ANSWERED THE TWR BY STATING THAT 'COMPANY XXX POS AND HOLD.' AFTER CHKING FOR LNDG TFC, WE WENT INTO POS, ONLY TO BE INFORMED WE WERE NOT CLRED INTO THE RWY. WE SIMPLY TURNED TO THE LEFT AND TAXIED CLR. NO DANGEROUS EVASIVE ACTION WAS REQUIRED. LOOKING BACK, I BELIEVE THE POS AND HOLD CLRNC WAS MEANT FOR A COMPANY COMMUTER THAT WAS PARALLEL TO OUR TXWY ON RWY 06. I AM NOT SURE IF THE CTLR USED OUR CALL SIGN OR NOT, BUT WE WERE SET TO FOLLOW THE MLG IN FRONT OF US BECAUSE WE WERE TOLD OUR SEQUENCE WAS BEHIND THE COMPANY MLG. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 148584: IF THE PROB WASN'T THAT THE CTLR HAD CLRED US WHEN HE MEANT SOMEONE ELSE THE ONLY OTHER EXPLANATION WE COULD FIGURE WAS THAT SINCE WE WERE RESPONDING TO EACH OTHER'S COMMANDS IN RESPONSE TO THE CHKLIST WE DID NOT HEAR THE CALL SIGN CORRECTLY AND RESPONDED TO SOMEONE ELSE'S CLRNC.
