Narrative:
On turn to final to 9R, we overshot 9R localizer into 9L airspace, speed 200 KTS, standard rate turn, descending to 1500'. As we turned controller said, 'don't go into 9L airspace;' however, he gave us no further instructions. We answered each time we were giving him all the turn we had (maximum 30 degrees). As we rolled out on course, he broke off the approach, to the right, and returned us for another (uneventful) approach. The problem would not have occurred had we been slower and/or further out on downwind. Supplemental information from acn 147997: last ATC instructions were 280 degrees heading off of bsy VORTAC which brought us in too tight on the downwind to 9R. Airspeed was 230 KIAS beginning base turn to the intercept heading of 060 degrees. I noticed high airspeed and asked if the captain could see the runway. He said, 'no.' I said, 'you need maximum bank to make the localizer.' it was too late; we overshot badly. Phone call to TRACON revealed no traffic conflict.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: WHILE VECTORED FORR INTERCEPT TO 9R AT MIA, ACR LGT FLT CREW OVERSHOOTS INTO 9L APCH PATH.
Narrative: ON TURN TO FINAL TO 9R, WE OVERSHOT 9R LOC INTO 9L AIRSPACE, SPD 200 KTS, STANDARD RATE TURN, DSNDING TO 1500'. AS WE TURNED CTLR SAID, 'DON'T GO INTO 9L AIRSPACE;' HOWEVER, HE GAVE US NO FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS. WE ANSWERED EACH TIME WE WERE GIVING HIM ALL THE TURN WE HAD (MAX 30 DEGS). AS WE ROLLED OUT ON COURSE, HE BROKE OFF THE APCH, TO THE RIGHT, AND RETURNED US FOR ANOTHER (UNEVENTFUL) APCH. THE PROB WOULD NOT HAVE OCCURRED HAD WE BEEN SLOWER AND/OR FURTHER OUT ON DOWNWIND. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 147997: LAST ATC INSTRUCTIONS WERE 280 DEGS HDG OFF OF BSY VORTAC WHICH BROUGHT US IN TOO TIGHT ON THE DOWNWIND TO 9R. AIRSPD WAS 230 KIAS BEGINNING BASE TURN TO THE INTERCEPT HDG OF 060 DEGS. I NOTICED HIGH AIRSPD AND ASKED IF THE CAPT COULD SEE THE RWY. HE SAID, 'NO.' I SAID, 'YOU NEED MAX BANK TO MAKE THE LOC.' IT WAS TOO LATE; WE OVERSHOT BADLY. PHONE CALL TO TRACON REVEALED NO TFC CONFLICT.
