Narrative:

Our clearance after contacting departure from phl was climb to 10000', upon leaving 2000' turn right direct modena VOR, (departed taxiway 27L). Modena 113.2 was set in both navigation heads. Out of 2000' a right turn toward the VOR was initiated. The copilot selected navigation position on his IRS mode selector and I initialized direct to modena on the legs page. Everything lined up and I then switched my IRS mode selector to navigation and turned my attention outside to check for traffic. Passing 6000', departure asked for our heading. We were on a 305 degree course and according to the IRS, proceeding direct to modena. We were informed modena was 265 degree, a 40 degree difference. I immediately switched back to VOR/ILS on the IRS mode selector and the controller was correct. We continued flight in VOR/ILS mode. There was supposedly no conflict with traffic. I wrote IRS up upon arrival in pit.
