Narrative:
We were cruising westbound at FL350 (mach .84) passing overhead irw VOR when another aircraft came within 500' or less of us at the same altitude, opp direction. We advised the controller of the near midair collision. Recommendation: don't let controllers assign altitudes that are not proper for the direction of flight, if this was the cause in this incident.
