Narrative:

After take-off from; nose landing gear did not retract. We got the lg/lever disagree message on EICAS. We recycle the landing gear unsuccessfully. We notify ATC; climbed to 4000ft; and enter into a holding pattern. We ran the QRH; notify the company; talk to the flight attendant (flight attendant); made a public address; and talked to maintenance and operations. We were heavy; so we held for about 30 minutes so we can get close to our maximum landing weight. We held with the landing gears down and locked (good indication 3 greens). While we were troubleshooting; we discover that one of the gear pins was missing. We realized that there was a good chance that the nose gear had a pin installed (not removed). While in the holding pattern with the gears down and locked; we felt a loud banging noise coming from under the cockpit by the nose gear wheel well (no abnormal indications on EICAS or flight controls). Once we got closer to our landing weight; we returned to the departure airport. On the way to the airport; we felt that banging noise a couple of times more. After we landed successfully; maintenance was waiting for us at the gate. They discovered and removed the pin that was installed on the nose gear. They told us that a mechanic was working earlier in the wheel well and forgot to remove the pin (we missed that as well). Maintenance said; 'just put it in the logbook; we clear the item; you guys get more fuel and you are on your way. No deplane is necessary'. That's when we told maintenance that we also heard a loud banging noise coming from under the cockpit (nose gear wheel well). He checked the logbook and realize previous crew wrote the same banging noise and that's why maintenance was working earlier in the wheel well. We wrote up the nose landing gear retraction (lg/lever disagree) and the loud banging noise on the logbook. They end up making an aircraft swap. No issues or incidents on our second attempt.[I will] improve pre-flight inspections. Double and triple check if necessary during checklists. Not only check logbook for open write up's; but read previous write up's and look for things that might be forgotten by maintenance or flight crew during pre and post flight inspections.
