Narrative:
Prior to descending to FL260 ATC informed us that moderate turbulence was reported from below FL260 to 'the low teens.' we asked the flight attendants to secure the cabin and informed them of the bumpy ride to come. We then turned on the seatbelt sign and made an announcement to the passengers to remain seated and that ATC had told us to expect some bumps.descending from FL240 through FL200 we experienced moderate and then severe turbulence. The captain slowed the aircraft from 280 KIAS to approximately 250 KIAS; although the airspeed was fluctuating somewhat. We probably spent two to three minutes in the moderate and then severe turbulence before descending out of it around FL200. We checked with the flight attendants and they informed us that the passengers and cabin crew were alright. It is worth noting that upon landing the aft cargo bin had become jammed and required several ramp and/or maintenance personnel to open. My postflight visual inspection revealed no other anomalies.
