Narrative:

Flying into roanoke from the northeast; cleared a visual approach to runway 34 on an assigned heading of 240 and maintain 4000 ft. We maintained 4000 ft because of terrain and talked about it. While coming over a ridge line I looked at the radar altimeter and saw about 2400 AGL. There was no terrain showing at all on the display. We got an egpws 'terrain pull up warning'. We complied and climbed 500 ft visually and confirmed the terrain warning was in error. There was no terrain showing during the terrain warning as well. Continued on without incident.
