Narrative:
During the descent, after crossing the sparta VOR, I observed an small aircraft at about our 11:30 position approximately 1/4 mi. He was also heading approximately 200 degrees. At the time we were slightly above and to the right of the small aircraft. First officer continued descending and the small aircraft passed off our left wing approximately 100' and level at 6500'. We continued the descent to 6000'. Ny TRACON had not advised us of any traffic in our area. We were indication 250 KTS with a closure rate of approximately 100-150 KTS.
