Narrative:
Because it was an early flight and we were flying over somewhat featureless terrain in the darkness of the pre-dawn hour; we misjudged our position. At 11;000 we were cleared for the visual and on a heading to intercept the 35L localizer. My first officer called to set 7;000 for the final approach fix (dymon). We began descending and since we were visual I had not thought to look down at my FMS to verify minimum altitudes along the localizer. When I realized we were getting real low; I queried my first officer and immediately thereafter we received a 'landing gear' aural warning followed by an altitude alert by ATC. We were aware that we were low and corrected and did cross the final approach fix at 7;000. The flight ended successfully without further incident.
