Narrative:
Maintenance accomplished on number 1 engine. Positioned engine stand to open cowling. While extending lift upward; stand stalled then surged up. Extended too far striking lower aft cowling [and] cracking a hole.found afterwards that with air compressor on [and] with lift operations in motion; engine [will] stall then surges.[add an] interlock to the stand [where] you can only operate [the] air or lift controls.

Title: Maintenance person reported that when a lift was used to open the engine cowling it surged up and damaged the lower aft cowling.
