Narrative:
Approaching apf from northwest over the shoreline VFR. Obtained ATIS and called up tower from 12 northwest. Tower instructed me to enter right midfield downwind to runway 5. This instruction made no sense because I was approaching apf from the northwest as announced and a left midfield entry would have been appropriate.after a minute or two I queried tower and again restated that I was northwest of the airport. Tower controller then issued the correct instruction to report midfield left downwind for runway 5.another in a continuing series of operational errors by this tower.
