Narrative:
While on a left base; approach cleared us to descend to 2;000 ft; I read the clearance back and the pilot flying descended to 2;000 ft. We where the switched to the tower who issued a low altitude alert and instructed us to climb to 2;500 ft as that was the MVA. We complied and landed uneventfully.

Title: B737 Captain reported that ATC issued a 'Low Altitude' alert and instructed them to climb.
Narrative: While on a left base; Approach cleared us to descend to 2;000 FT; I read the clearance back and the Pilot Flying descended to 2;000 FT.
