Narrative:
During maneuvering to avoid a line of thunderstorms we requested a clearance into the positive control area. With the local altimeter set prior to penetrating 18000' we were indicating below the positive control area with 29.92 set. We were in the positive control area prior to clearance. The controller advised us of this problem. We never flew in the clouds as the objective was to stay clear of the thunderstorm.
