Narrative:

After a successful pushback and engine starts; I communicated via radio intercom we had two successful engine starts; they were clear to disconnect communications and to look for my signal; the taxi light.I signaled with the taxi light and got the salute from the ground crew. I could hear the headset being unplugged from the aircraft.we initiated the 'after start' check list and that is where things happened. We got APU fault EICAS message followed by APU btl 1; APU BTL2 .overhead panel APU fault; APU gen center counsel APU btl 1 ; APU BTL2 discharge lights illuminated.I tried to flag down the ground crew but they had already left. I called ramp control on the radio to ask them if they could see any fire; smoke or any other abnormality from the tail of the aircraft. They stated everything looked normal from where they were.we contacted maintenance; advised them of the problem and they advised us to return to the gate for further investigation into the matter.we never got an APU fire warning and because the APU already had shut down; we did not initiate any checklist. We deemed it more prudent to leave switches in their last respective positions; so maintenance could better troubleshoot the problem.
