Narrative:
During the takeoff run the plane didn't seem to be accelerating adequately and it was decided to abort the takeoff. Unfortunately there is about 20' of overrun on runway 30 and the left wing sheared off 2 mail boxes. No personal injury or any other damage, than the wing damage caused by the 2 mail boxes. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information. Reporter described aircraft involved more completely. The cause of the abort was a door coming unlatched and indecisiveness on the part of reporter. He changed his mind about aborting twice after noting the door latch problem so carried into the overrun area before getting stopped. No significant damage to aircraft. Reporter reported to FAA on the occurrence and they required him to demonstrate an aborted takeoff, otherwise no enforcement action taken.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: DOOR LATCH OPENS DURING TKOF RUN AND PLT DELAYS ABORT DECISION RESULTING IN RWY EXCURSION INTO OVERRUN AREA.
Narrative: DURING THE TKOF RUN THE PLANE DIDN'T SEEM TO BE ACCELERATING ADEQUATELY AND IT WAS DECIDED TO ABORT THE TKOF. UNFORTUNATELY THERE IS ABOUT 20' OF OVERRUN ON RWY 30 AND THE L WING SHEARED OFF 2 MAIL BOXES. NO PERSONAL INJURY OR ANY OTHER DAMAGE, THAN THE WING DAMAGE CAUSED BY THE 2 MAIL BOXES. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO. RPTR DESCRIBED ACFT INVOLVED MORE COMPLETELY. THE CAUSE OF THE ABORT WAS A DOOR COMING UNLATCHED AND INDECISIVENESS ON THE PART OF RPTR. HE CHANGED HIS MIND ABOUT ABORTING TWICE AFTER NOTING THE DOOR LATCH PROB SO CARRIED INTO THE OVERRUN AREA BEFORE GETTING STOPPED. NO SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE TO ACFT. RPTR RPTED TO FAA ON THE OCCURRENCE AND THEY REQUIRED HIM TO DEMONSTRATE AN ABORTED TKOF, OTHERWISE NO ENFORCEMENT ACTION TAKEN.
