Narrative:
The jfk to lax flight had to land in okc to refuel because excessive ground delays in new york and an extensive rerouting had made it necessary. Upon arrival in the okc area the widebody transport was 9000 pounds too heavy for landing. Eventually the aircraft landed at 352250 pounds, 4450 pounds over the 347900 afm. Airline dispatch had negated the choice of dumping fuel prior to landing. The airline maintenance department absolutely insisted that the actual landing weight was not considered overweight and did not warrant an entry in the aircraft logbook. Any entry indicating an overweight landing would cause a delay of several hours to the passengers who had already taken 6 hours and 20 mins just to get to oklahoma city. On the adamant advice of tulsa maintenance I proceeded to lax west/O making a logbook entry. Upon arrival in lax the flight office declared that a logbook entry should have been made to comply with the aircraft flight manual part one. This book is contradicted by the MEL and the airline's maintenance manual.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: UNDER PRESSURE FROM THE AIRLINE DISPATCH OFFICE, ACR FLT CREW CONDUCTS OVERWEIGHT LNDG SHORT OF DESTINATION DUE LONG DELAYS.
Narrative: THE JFK TO LAX FLT HAD TO LAND IN OKC TO REFUEL BECAUSE EXCESSIVE GND DELAYS IN NEW YORK AND AN EXTENSIVE REROUTING HAD MADE IT NECESSARY. UPON ARR IN THE OKC AREA THE WDB WAS 9000 LBS TOO HVY FOR LNDG. EVENTUALLY THE ACFT LANDED AT 352250 LBS, 4450 LBS OVER THE 347900 AFM. AIRLINE DISPATCH HAD NEGATED THE CHOICE OF DUMPING FUEL PRIOR TO LNDG. THE AIRLINE MAINT DEPT ABSOLUTELY INSISTED THAT THE ACTUAL LNDG WT WAS NOT CONSIDERED OVERWT AND DID NOT WARRANT AN ENTRY IN THE ACFT LOGBOOK. ANY ENTRY INDICATING AN OVERWT LNDG WOULD CAUSE A DELAY OF SEVERAL HRS TO THE PAXS WHO HAD ALREADY TAKEN 6 HRS AND 20 MINS JUST TO GET TO OKLAHOMA CITY. ON THE ADAMANT ADVICE OF TULSA MAINT I PROCEEDED TO LAX W/O MAKING A LOGBOOK ENTRY. UPON ARR IN LAX THE FLT OFFICE DECLARED THAT A LOGBOOK ENTRY SHOULD HAVE BEEN MADE TO COMPLY WITH THE ACFT FLT MANUAL PART ONE. THIS BOOK IS CONTRADICTED BY THE MEL AND THE AIRLINE'S MAINT MANUAL.
