Narrative:
We were on the arrival into ZZZ and were descending to 6000 ft. We were assigned [runway] xr and told to descend to 3000 feet. I read back xr and 3000 feet. I proceeded to put in the localizer frequency for xr and reprogrammed the FMS to xr. We were given a heading to intercept the xr localizer. Then the controller said we were going to the wrong runway and to go left to runway xl. We did and contacted tower. On taxi we were given a phone number. The captain spoke to [the] supervisor who explained the controller gave us xr; then changed up back to xl on the radar screen but never told us. [He] explained it was not our fault and took responsibility for what happened. I shortly after called the supervisor as well and he explained it to me as well and said we did nothing wrong. Approach didn't tell us to back to 8L and that caused a deviation.
