Narrative:
I tried to load pertinent data into the drop down menus within [the reporting system]; but they were not available. We were cleared by center to descend via the parqr STAR into clt; landing south; we then got a frequency change to approach. It was a little tight on the descent and as were discussing that point we determined we were too high on one of the descent points. Just before I asked for relief the controller asked if were given the descend via late. It confused me somewhat and I replied no; I was still trying to figure out where we went wrong during his query. He turned us off of the STAR and nothing else was mentioned. I thought he turned us out before we crossed the fix/restriction.Cause1. Failure to closely focus on situational awareness especially in regards to aircraft position on STAR.2. Complacency- long and relatively quiet flight followed by a busy arrival. In error I didn't see the threat; great regrets.3. Late clearance that we should have started right down on instead of looking over the points and then planning. 4. Lack of effective crew communication on navigation fixes; altitudes and intents.5. Could have briefed earlier in the flight.this was a very eye opening event for me. I need to brief earlier and focus closely on each fix of the stars. I need to recognize complacency and strive to avoid it and always combat it. The procedures are well laid out for us in the SOP manual and I always closely them. I pride myself on good communication; but obviously the fact that this event happened tells me much about each time; every time discussing and never assuming. This time acting quickly escaped me due to complacency and getting jammed and I'm still recovering from the realization it happened to me; good lesson. This event was 100% preventable and each cause listed above is what I will take with me as a means to recognize my shortcomings and set my intentions and follow through to prevent it from happening again.
