Narrative:
Very light traffic load. Southbound light transport climbing to FL410. Westbound ord FL350. Issued at time restriction for light transport to depart FL370 in 3 mins or less, report leaving. After determining that his was insufficient, issued 2 200 degree right turn, but still insufficient to prevent error. Traffic at FL350 not in my airspace as I voluntarily was providing the sep. My initial judgement, based on use of time/vector lines provided for us, was that the time restriction should have been sufficient for sep, so it basically was my error in judgement. Also, there are a lot of tendencies to work extra hear to provide service to higher performance aircraft (i.e., the light transport in this case) to get them up to their cruising altitudes. If traffic had been moderate or greater, I probably would have left the light transport at FL330 until clearing underneath the traffic.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN ACFT CLIMBED THROUGH AN ALT OF ANOTHER ACFT WITH LESS THAN STANDARD SEPARATION.
Narrative: VERY LIGHT TFC LOAD. SBND LTT CLBING TO FL410. WBND ORD FL350. ISSUED AT TIME RESTRICTION FOR LTT TO DEPART FL370 IN 3 MINS OR LESS, RPT LEAVING. AFTER DETERMINING THAT HIS WAS INSUFFICIENT, ISSUED 2 200 DEG RIGHT TURN, BUT STILL INSUFFICIENT TO PREVENT ERROR. TFC AT FL350 NOT IN MY AIRSPACE AS I VOLUNTARILY WAS PROVIDING THE SEP. MY INITIAL JUDGEMENT, BASED ON USE OF TIME/VECTOR LINES PROVIDED FOR US, WAS THAT THE TIME RESTRICTION SHOULD HAVE BEEN SUFFICIENT FOR SEP, SO IT BASICALLY WAS MY ERROR IN JUDGEMENT. ALSO, THERE ARE A LOT OF TENDENCIES TO WORK EXTRA HEAR TO PROVIDE SVC TO HIGHER PERFORMANCE ACFT (I.E., THE LTT IN THIS CASE) TO GET THEM UP TO THEIR CRUISING ALTS. IF TFC HAD BEEN MODERATE OR GREATER, I PROBABLY WOULD HAVE LEFT THE LTT AT FL330 UNTIL CLRING UNDERNEATH THE TFC.
