Narrative:

ZID controller cleared us to FL280. We read back clearance and climbed to FL280. Controller did not dispute clearance readback. Established at FL280 for approximately 5 mins. Controller inquired as to our altitude: 'verify level at 270.' we responded: 'you cleared us to 280.' controller issued a clearance for immediate right 30 degree turn for us and also to an air carrier Z aircraft. After a while we were cleared direct to otman intersection on J30. I asked the controller if he wanted me to call on the landline. He said no. Flight continued to destination dca with no further incident controller and flight crew both acted professionally. Clearance readback and acknowledgement on both parts (controller and flight crew) should be strictly adhered to at all times.
