Narrative:

Immediately after takeoff, the first class smoke detector alarm sounded and smoke was reported in the cabin. An emergency was declared and we circled to land uneventfully. With a 2 man crew and a critical phase of flight (takeoff and landing), communication was the key factor affecting the safety of the flight. Initially both pilots were listening to the F/a reports as well as ATC. Once the PF talked to ATC and PNF talked with the cabin attendants soley, any confusion or communication overlap was taken care of. Limited approach navaids at clear was also very detrimental to the safety of a visibility approach in an emergency situation. No ILS/G/south/localizer not even a VASI as a back up for dawn approach.
