Narrative:
We had been vectored to intercept and subsequently cleared for the lax 24R ILS at 2500' MSL. Established on the localizer approximately 12 DME we switched to the tower. About the same time the first officer (PNF) said he had traffic at our 2 to 3 O'clock in a turn towards us and would keep an eye on him. We queried the tower. He sated that an air carrier Z was behind us in sight and would remain behind us for a visibility approach to runway 24L. We replied that the aircraft was in front of us at our 1 O'clock and closing. By that time I was climbing and went to 3000' MSL. He went directly under us on an approximately heading of 210-220 degrees headed for the runway 24L which was not visible due to haze. I believe the air carrier Z flight later went around but I'm not sure. This near miss could have been prevented by air carrier Z taking an ILS versus a visibility approach due to the hazy visibility. I believe he mis-idented our aircraft with an aircraft landing on the 25 complex and did not see us.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CLOSE PROX ACR MLG STRAIGHT INTO RWY 24R AT LAX AND ACR MLG CIRCLING VISUAL FROM THE NORTH TO RWY 24L.
Narrative: WE HAD BEEN VECTORED TO INTERCEPT AND SUBSEQUENTLY CLRED FOR THE LAX 24R ILS AT 2500' MSL. ESTABLISHED ON THE LOC APPROX 12 DME WE SWITCHED TO THE TWR. ABOUT THE SAME TIME THE F/O (PNF) SAID HE HAD TFC AT OUR 2 TO 3 O'CLOCK IN A TURN TOWARDS US AND WOULD KEEP AN EYE ON HIM. WE QUERIED THE TWR. HE SATED THAT AN ACR Z WAS BEHIND US IN SIGHT AND WOULD REMAIN BEHIND US FOR A VIS APCH TO RWY 24L. WE REPLIED THAT THE ACFT WAS IN FRONT OF US AT OUR 1 O'CLOCK AND CLOSING. BY THAT TIME I WAS CLBING AND WENT TO 3000' MSL. HE WENT DIRECTLY UNDER US ON AN APPROX HDG OF 210-220 DEGS HEADED FOR THE RWY 24L WHICH WAS NOT VISIBLE DUE TO HAZE. I BELIEVE THE ACR Z FLT LATER WENT AROUND BUT I'M NOT SURE. THIS NEAR MISS COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED BY ACR Z TAKING AN ILS VERSUS A VIS APCH DUE TO THE HAZY VISIBILITY. I BELIEVE HE MIS-IDENTED OUR ACFT WITH AN ACFT LNDG ON THE 25 COMPLEX AND DID NOT SEE US.
