Narrative:
Medium large transport X departed and I turned him to the southeast (departing to the northwest). He was 4 mi from the airport when the second medium large transport Y departed wanting to go to the northeast and the first aircraft was 4 mi ahead. I turned the second thinking he is of like aircraft and would not catch the first. The first medium large transport X was slow turning and climbing while the second medium large transport Y was a little faster in his climb and turning. They did get less than 3 mi and less than 1000'. What probably took my attention away from the two was two other aircraft that were on vectors for airport and a departure flight.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: DEP CTLR DISTRACTED BY ARR TRAFFIC AND DID NOT SEE THE SECOND MLG DEP ACFT OVERTAKING THE FIRST ONE UNTIL SEPARATION WAS LOST.
Narrative: MLG X DEPARTED AND I TURNED HIM TO THE SE (DEPARTING TO THE NW). HE WAS 4 MI FROM THE ARPT WHEN THE SEC MLG Y DEPARTED WANTING TO GO TO THE NE AND THE FIRST ACFT WAS 4 MI AHEAD. I TURNED THE SEC THINKING HE IS OF LIKE ACFT AND WOULD NOT CATCH THE FIRST. THE FIRST MLG X WAS SLOW TURNING AND CLBING WHILE THE SEC MLG Y WAS A LITTLE FASTER IN HIS CLB AND TURNING. THEY DID GET LESS THAN 3 MI AND LESS THAN 1000'. WHAT PROBABLY TOOK MY ATTN AWAY FROM THE TWO WAS TWO OTHER ACFT THAT WERE ON VECTORS FOR ARPT AND A DEP FLT.
