Narrative:

This flight was an IFR training flight conducted in an small aircraft. En route to cle while talking to mfd approach, there was a span of time where we didn't hear anything, so we put mfd approach (119.25) in #1 command and called mfd approach. They advised us they were trying to call and that we should now switch to cle approach. We did so and advised that we didn't hear him on #2 communication. While working with cle we asked for the localizer 23L approach. They said we could expect the localizer 23L approach sidestep 23R approach into cle. We were advised to keep our speed as fast as we could give them due to traffic behind us. The student was all over the approach path, doing a poor job. I then took the aircraft to get established on the approach. Approach control told us to switch to tower. My student switched the toggle switch to #2 communication which had tower 120.9 programmed. I continued to get the aircraft to the airport. My student picked up the microphone, but I couldn't confirm whether he made the cal because I was flying. We landed on 23R and taxied down the runway. I thought it was unusual that tower hadn't told us to turn off, so I had my student turn off on taxiway kilo. While on the taxiway I made repeated attempts to contact tower. I then switched to ground and called them. We proceeded to taxi to FBO where we were instructed to call ground control. I explained everything previously stated and determined with the controller that we apparently have some sort of radio problem. The controller stated that at times we were intermittent. He said they repeatedly tried to call us and I advised that we never heard any xmissions. He also did not receive my xmissions while on taxiway kilo. He suggested we have our radios checked. We then checked the radios by calling the FBO and found our #2 communication to be intermittent. I called back the controller to inform him of this. He stated that he called downstairs to the TRACON and confirmed we had a radio problem because the TRACON lost communication with us for 10-15 mi. I advised him that we would be departing back to osu and would use only our #1 communication. The only problem that occurred was that an air carrier medium large transport that was following us had to break off his approach to 23R and land on runway 18 because we did not turn off until kilo. The controller also stated that we were given a steady green light gun, which we didn't see, while on the approach. I asked if there would be any action taking place. The controller said no, that we should get the radio fixed, however. We departed cle back to osu on our #1 communication with no problem.

Title: GA SMA ON A TRAINING FLT LANDED AT CLE WITHOUT COMMUNICATING WITH THE TWR.

Narrative: THIS FLT WAS AN IFR TRNING FLT CONDUCTED IN AN SMA. ENRTE TO CLE WHILE TALKING TO MFD APCH, THERE WAS A SPAN OF TIME WHERE WE DIDN'T HEAR ANYTHING, SO WE PUT MFD APCH (119.25) IN #1 COMMAND AND CALLED MFD APCH. THEY ADVISED US THEY WERE TRYING TO CALL AND THAT WE SHOULD NOW SWITCH TO CLE APCH. WE DID SO AND ADVISED THAT WE DIDN'T HEAR HIM ON #2 COM. WHILE WORKING WITH CLE WE ASKED FOR THE LOC 23L APCH. THEY SAID WE COULD EXPECT THE LOC 23L APCH SIDESTEP 23R APCH INTO CLE. WE WERE ADVISED TO KEEP OUR SPD AS FAST AS WE COULD GIVE THEM DUE TO TFC BEHIND US. THE STUDENT WAS ALL OVER THE APCH PATH, DOING A POOR JOB. I THEN TOOK THE ACFT TO GET ESTABLISHED ON THE APCH. APCH CTL TOLD US TO SWITCH TO TWR. MY STUDENT SWITCHED THE TOGGLE SWITCH TO #2 COM WHICH HAD TWR 120.9 PROGRAMMED. I CONTINUED TO GET THE ACFT TO THE ARPT. MY STUDENT PICKED UP THE MIC, BUT I COULDN'T CONFIRM WHETHER HE MADE THE CAL BECAUSE I WAS FLYING. WE LANDED ON 23R AND TAXIED DOWN THE RWY. I THOUGHT IT WAS UNUSUAL THAT TWR HADN'T TOLD US TO TURN OFF, SO I HAD MY STUDENT TURN OFF ON TXWY KILO. WHILE ON THE TXWY I MADE REPEATED ATTEMPTS TO CONTACT TWR. I THEN SWITCHED TO GND AND CALLED THEM. WE PROCEEDED TO TAXI TO FBO WHERE WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO CALL GND CTL. I EXPLAINED EVERYTHING PREVIOUSLY STATED AND DETERMINED WITH THE CTLR THAT WE APPARENTLY HAVE SOME SORT OF RADIO PROB. THE CTLR STATED THAT AT TIMES WE WERE INTERMITTENT. HE SAID THEY REPEATEDLY TRIED TO CALL US AND I ADVISED THAT WE NEVER HEARD ANY XMISSIONS. HE ALSO DID NOT RECEIVE MY XMISSIONS WHILE ON TXWY KILO. HE SUGGESTED WE HAVE OUR RADIOS CHKED. WE THEN CHKED THE RADIOS BY CALLING THE FBO AND FOUND OUR #2 COM TO BE INTERMITTENT. I CALLED BACK THE CTLR TO INFORM HIM OF THIS. HE STATED THAT HE CALLED DOWNSTAIRS TO THE TRACON AND CONFIRMED WE HAD A RADIO PROB BECAUSE THE TRACON LOST COM WITH US FOR 10-15 MI. I ADVISED HIM THAT WE WOULD BE DEPARTING BACK TO OSU AND WOULD USE ONLY OUR #1 COM. THE ONLY PROB THAT OCCURRED WAS THAT AN ACR MLG THAT WAS FOLLOWING US HAD TO BREAK OFF HIS APCH TO 23R AND LAND ON RWY 18 BECAUSE WE DID NOT TURN OFF UNTIL KILO. THE CTLR ALSO STATED THAT WE WERE GIVEN A STEADY GREEN LIGHT GUN, WHICH WE DIDN'T SEE, WHILE ON THE APCH. I ASKED IF THERE WOULD BE ANY ACTION TAKING PLACE. THE CTLR SAID NO, THAT WE SHOULD GET THE RADIO FIXED, HOWEVER. WE DEPARTED CLE BACK TO OSU ON OUR #1 COM WITH NO PROB.
