Narrative:
Training x-country phase. Student was navigating VFR sebnd through the bos TCA with clearance through the TCA to remain 15 mi southeast of bos. When the flight was approximately 8 mi north of norwood, ma, I instructed the student to divert to minuteman airport. The divert required a change in course of about 180 degree. As the student turned on the new course and began a VFR descent to 2500' the controller called requesting our new heading. I responded that we were beginning a divert to minuteman and were descending. He replied negative climb maintain 3500' for traffic. After clearing traffic we were cleared on course at requested altitude. To summarize, my inaction to call prior to the divert was inappropriate even though we were VFR. The delay in the call, however, was only 1-2 mins. The controllers excited response to our heading was understandable. Next time the call will come first.

Title: GA SMA NON ADHERENCE TO CLRNC THROUGH THE BOS TCA.
Narrative: TRNING X-COUNTRY PHASE. STUDENT WAS NAVIGATING VFR SEBND THROUGH THE BOS TCA WITH CLRNC THROUGH THE TCA TO REMAIN 15 MI SE OF BOS. WHEN THE FLT WAS APPROX 8 MI N OF NORWOOD, MA, I INSTRUCTED THE STUDENT TO DIVERT TO MINUTEMAN ARPT. THE DIVERT REQUIRED A CHANGE IN COURSE OF ABOUT 180 DEG. AS THE STUDENT TURNED ON THE NEW COURSE AND BEGAN A VFR DSNT TO 2500' THE CTLR CALLED REQUESTING OUR NEW HDG. I RESPONDED THAT WE WERE BEGINNING A DIVERT TO MINUTEMAN AND WERE DSNDING. HE REPLIED NEGATIVE CLB MAINTAIN 3500' FOR TFC. AFTER CLRING TFC WE WERE CLRED ON COURSE AT REQUESTED ALT. TO SUMMARIZE, MY INACTION TO CALL PRIOR TO THE DIVERT WAS INAPPROPRIATE EVEN THOUGH WE WERE VFR. THE DELAY IN THE CALL, HOWEVER, WAS ONLY 1-2 MINS. THE CTLRS EXCITED RESPONSE TO OUR HDG WAS UNDERSTANDABLE. NEXT TIME THE CALL WILL COME FIRST.
