Narrative:
My student and I were executing takeoffs and lndgs for his complex training. The student was performing well and on the last traffic pattern before returning to daytona I decided to simulate an engine failure by retarding the throttle to idle on downwind leg. I was preoccupied with explaining the flight characteristics of the aircraft west/O power (high sink rate, turning short final etc) and did not check the gear down light. Also the gear warning did not sound even though the throttle was at idle and full flaps were extended. Contributing factors I believe were: the occurrence was at the end of the day, the student was performing well and I was perhaps more lax than I would have been than with a poor student, and I was distraction by the simulated engine failure and the gear warning horn did not work.
