Narrative:
We were cleared into position and hold for takeoff. We acknowledged the clearance and taxied into the takeoff position. After holding in the takeoff position for approximately 1 min we noticed that we were hearing no further communications from the tower. We were observing lndgs on the other active runway. We attempted to contact the tower but received no answer. We then switched to the #2 head on the same radio and heard the tower attempting to contact us to give us takeoff clearance. We acknowledged and the tower said they had attempted to contact us several ties. We informed the tower that we had apparently experienced a failure of the #1 head of our #1 radio and that we were now reading them 5 X 5. We received takeoff clearance and departed. We later attempted to duplicate the radio failure but were unable to do so. It appears that the radio experienced a transient failure that was cleared by recycling the frequency selector knobs.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR MLG HAD AN INTERMITTENT RADIO FAILURE AFTER TAXIING INTO POSITION AT BOS.
Narrative: WE WERE CLRED INTO POS AND HOLD FOR TKOF. WE ACKNOWLEDGED THE CLRNC AND TAXIED INTO THE TKOF POS. AFTER HOLDING IN THE TKOF POS FOR APPROX 1 MIN WE NOTICED THAT WE WERE HEARING NO FURTHER COMS FROM THE TWR. WE WERE OBSERVING LNDGS ON THE OTHER ACTIVE RWY. WE ATTEMPTED TO CONTACT THE TWR BUT RECEIVED NO ANSWER. WE THEN SWITCHED TO THE #2 HEAD ON THE SAME RADIO AND HEARD THE TWR ATTEMPTING TO CONTACT US TO GIVE US TKOF CLRNC. WE ACKNOWLEDGED AND THE TWR SAID THEY HAD ATTEMPTED TO CONTACT US SEVERAL TIES. WE INFORMED THE TWR THAT WE HAD APPARENTLY EXPERIENCED A FAILURE OF THE #1 HEAD OF OUR #1 RADIO AND THAT WE WERE NOW READING THEM 5 X 5. WE RECEIVED TKOF CLRNC AND DEPARTED. WE LATER ATTEMPTED TO DUPLICATE THE RADIO FAILURE BUT WERE UNABLE TO DO SO. IT APPEARS THAT THE RADIO EXPERIENCED A TRANSIENT FAILURE THAT WAS CLRED BY RECYCLING THE FREQ SELECTOR KNOBS.
