Narrative:
After shooting the VOR/DME a circle to 19 cpr X was instructed to fly a 1500 downwind because of numerous aircraft in the pattern which we were aware of because while shooting the approach there was much radio confusion trying to keep airplanes straight. Just after turning base we were asked to widen to the right because we were #2 behind an small transport Y on a straight in approach. We had not been given a sequence prior to that or were we aware of the small transport Y. Seconds later we were instructed to turn right which we felt would turn us directly into the approach of the small transport Y which we had not yet seen. After spotting the small transport Y we started a climb and flew our base across final in front of the small transport Y and were then instructed to turn a right 270 degree and enter on final. We were still uncomfortable because we knew some of the pattern aircraft were given right downwinds. We continued and landed west/O further incident, although we never saw any of downwind aircraft. Three problems seemed evident. Confusion in the tower about where aircraft in the pattern were. Too many aircraft in the pattern. Straight in approach authority/authorized while everyone else was lined up for the VOR/DME approach. Knowing of past accidents and experiences of mixed performance aircraft in the teb area I was very uncomfortable because of the number of aircraft in the pattern.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CPR X NON ADHERENCE TO ATC INSTRUCTION HAD CONFLICT WITH SMT Y.
Narrative: AFTER SHOOTING THE VOR/DME A CIRCLE TO 19 CPR X WAS INSTRUCTED TO FLY A 1500 DOWNWIND BECAUSE OF NUMEROUS ACFT IN THE PATTERN WHICH WE WERE AWARE OF BECAUSE WHILE SHOOTING THE APCH THERE WAS MUCH RADIO CONFUSION TRYING TO KEEP AIRPLANES STRAIGHT. JUST AFTER TURNING BASE WE WERE ASKED TO WIDEN TO THE R BECAUSE WE WERE #2 BEHIND AN SMT Y ON A STRAIGHT IN APCH. WE HAD NOT BEEN GIVEN A SEQUENCE PRIOR TO THAT OR WERE WE AWARE OF THE SMT Y. SECS LATER WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO TURN R WHICH WE FELT WOULD TURN US DIRECTLY INTO THE APCH OF THE SMT Y WHICH WE HAD NOT YET SEEN. AFTER SPOTTING THE SMT Y WE STARTED A CLB AND FLEW OUR BASE ACROSS FINAL IN FRONT OF THE SMT Y AND WERE THEN INSTRUCTED TO TURN A R 270 DEG AND ENTER ON FINAL. WE WERE STILL UNCOMFORTABLE BECAUSE WE KNEW SOME OF THE PATTERN ACFT WERE GIVEN R DOWNWINDS. WE CONTINUED AND LANDED W/O FURTHER INCIDENT, ALTHOUGH WE NEVER SAW ANY OF DOWNWIND ACFT. THREE PROBS SEEMED EVIDENT. CONFUSION IN THE TWR ABOUT WHERE ACFT IN THE PATTERN WERE. TOO MANY ACFT IN THE PATTERN. STRAIGHT IN APCH AUTH WHILE EVERYONE ELSE WAS LINED UP FOR THE VOR/DME APCH. KNOWING OF PAST ACCIDENTS AND EXPERIENCES OF MIXED PERFORMANCE ACFT IN THE TEB AREA I WAS VERY UNCOMFORTABLE BECAUSE OF THE NUMBER OF ACFT IN THE PATTERN.
