Narrative:
During climb, upon gear retraction, red 'nose gear unsafe' light remained illuminated. Abnormal procedures as set forth in the pilots handbook were accomplished, and red 'nose gear unsafe' light remained illuminated. From the disrupted airflows rumbling noise, we were sure the indicator light was correct. Conferring with dispatch, maintenance, and 'operations', it was decided to return to pit for maintenance, rather than continue to a non maintenance base. A return to pit was made with normal gear extension prior to landing, all indications being normal, and a normal landing being performed. (No overweight landing or abnormal indications involved).
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR MLG HAD TO RETURN TO DEP ARPT BECAUSE THE NOSE GEAR WOULD NOT RETRACT.
Narrative: DURING CLB, UPON GEAR RETRACTION, RED 'NOSE GEAR UNSAFE' LIGHT REMAINED ILLUMINATED. ABNORMAL PROCS AS SET FORTH IN THE PLTS HANDBOOK WERE ACCOMPLISHED, AND RED 'NOSE GEAR UNSAFE' LIGHT REMAINED ILLUMINATED. FROM THE DISRUPTED AIRFLOWS RUMBLING NOISE, WE WERE SURE THE INDICATOR LIGHT WAS CORRECT. CONFERRING WITH DISPATCH, MAINT, AND 'OPS', IT WAS DECIDED TO RETURN TO PIT FOR MAINT, RATHER THAN CONTINUE TO A NON MAINT BASE. A RETURN TO PIT WAS MADE WITH NORMAL GEAR EXTENSION PRIOR TO LNDG, ALL INDICATIONS BEING NORMAL, AND A NORMAL LNDG BEING PERFORMED. (NO OVERWEIGHT LNDG OR ABNORMAL INDICATIONS INVOLVED).
