Narrative:
Due to heavy aircraft weight, we had to use runway 34L at rno. ZOA held us on the ground for over 30 mins (approximately 1 hour) to fit us into ATC flow with this opp direction takeoff. We were cleared on a nugget 1 departure. After takeoff, we proceeded directly to the 'no' radio beacon, then tracked out the 360 degree right as published. Shortly after takeoff, we had a strong electrical fire smell in the cockpit, which did divert our attention somewhat. The captain was flying and I did monitor and call the beacon passage and outbnd course to level-off altitude. As we rolled level outbnd, at about 1500' AGL, we both saw the flash of a white (primarily white) aircraft bottom fill the windshield. I estimate missing him by 200-500' vertical as we climbed. I reported to departure. They said they had no traffic. A few mins later they called back and said the only reported traffic was an small aircraft on final to runway 16. (That looks suspicious to me!)
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: LGT TYPE ACFT TAKING OFF AND CLIMBING OPPOSITE DIRECTION TO TRAFFIC, BUT UNDER RADAR DEP CTL HAD NMAC WITH SMA ON FINAL FOR 16, NOT REPORTED AND APPARENTLY VFR.
Narrative: DUE TO HEAVY ACFT WT, WE HAD TO USE RWY 34L AT RNO. ZOA HELD US ON THE GND FOR OVER 30 MINS (APPROX 1 HR) TO FIT US INTO ATC FLOW WITH THIS OPP DIRECTION TKOF. WE WERE CLRED ON A NUGGET 1 DEP. AFTER TKOF, WE PROCEEDED DIRECTLY TO THE 'NO' RADIO BEACON, THEN TRACKED OUT THE 360 DEG R AS PUBLISHED. SHORTLY AFTER TKOF, WE HAD A STRONG ELECTRICAL FIRE SMELL IN THE COCKPIT, WHICH DID DIVERT OUR ATTN SOMEWHAT. THE CAPT WAS FLYING AND I DID MONITOR AND CALL THE BEACON PASSAGE AND OUTBND COURSE TO LEVEL-OFF ALT. AS WE ROLLED LEVEL OUTBND, AT ABOUT 1500' AGL, WE BOTH SAW THE FLASH OF A WHITE (PRIMARILY WHITE) ACFT BOTTOM FILL THE WINDSHIELD. I ESTIMATE MISSING HIM BY 200-500' VERT AS WE CLBED. I RPTED TO DEP. THEY SAID THEY HAD NO TFC. A FEW MINS LATER THEY CALLED BACK AND SAID THE ONLY RPTED TFC WAS AN SMA ON FINAL TO RWY 16. (THAT LOOKS SUSPICIOUS TO ME!)
