Narrative:
Inbound to ont from chino a touch and go was requested and I thought that that was approved with instructions to report left base for runway 26L. On downwind while instructing the student that was with me I thought that the tower told us to go. Upon executing the touch and go the tower asked what we were doing. We informed them that we were doing a touch and go. The controller said that we had been cleared to land. The student who was operating the aircraft is japanese and his accent may not have been understood by the controller. Also, the greater attention should have been paid by us to the controller. We should not have assumed anything and should have asked for clarification if we were unsure.
