Narrative:

Takeoff clearance was given for runway 23L. Takeoff was aborted just as takeoff power was set, approximately 60 KTS, when I realized we were on runway 28 instead of 23L. We were cleared into position to hold on 23L. My first officer said we were 1000' up the runway because he could see the T/D zone markings. This was confusing to me at first, but I was confident we were at the threshold of 23L since we were at taxiway left. During the turn on as I was observing the markings my first officer had noticed, we were cleared for takeoff. I swung the nose of the aircraft to align down the runway and applied takeoff power. Just as the first officer announced the power set, I glanced down at my HSI and noted the heading bug was off to the left and recognized our runway heading was 280 degrees. I aborted the takeoff and my first officer advised tower. The controller gave a 180 degree turn and clearance back to 23L, and subsequently clearance for takeoff on 23L as we approached it. This incident could have been averted if I had requested to hold short when given clearance for takeoff so that we would not have been rushed to complete the checklist. The first officer and I would also have been able to resolve the issue of our location if we had taken a little more time. As captain, I should have had more of a situational awareness of the runways and been more alert to the relative position of my aircraft at the hold line and the turn required to line up with the correct runway. Also, more vigilance is required for rolling takeoffs during night conditions.

Title: ACR MLG TKOF ABORTED WHEN PIC PF NOTICED THEY WERE ON THE WRONG RWY AT CLE.

Narrative: TKOF CLRNC WAS GIVEN FOR RWY 23L. TKOF WAS ABORTED JUST AS TKOF PWR WAS SET, APPROX 60 KTS, WHEN I REALIZED WE WERE ON RWY 28 INSTEAD OF 23L. WE WERE CLRED INTO POS TO HOLD ON 23L. MY F/O SAID WE WERE 1000' UP THE RWY BECAUSE HE COULD SEE THE T/D ZONE MARKINGS. THIS WAS CONFUSING TO ME AT FIRST, BUT I WAS CONFIDENT WE WERE AT THE THRESHOLD OF 23L SINCE WE WERE AT TXWY L. DURING THE TURN ON AS I WAS OBSERVING THE MARKINGS MY F/O HAD NOTICED, WE WERE CLRED FOR TKOF. I SWUNG THE NOSE OF THE ACFT TO ALIGN DOWN THE RWY AND APPLIED TKOF PWR. JUST AS THE F/O ANNOUNCED THE PWR SET, I GLANCED DOWN AT MY HSI AND NOTED THE HDG BUG WAS OFF TO THE LEFT AND RECOGNIZED OUR RWY HDG WAS 280 DEGS. I ABORTED THE TKOF AND MY F/O ADVISED TWR. THE CTLR GAVE A 180 DEG TURN AND CLRNC BACK TO 23L, AND SUBSEQUENTLY CLRNC FOR TKOF ON 23L AS WE APCHED IT. THIS INCIDENT COULD HAVE BEEN AVERTED IF I HAD REQUESTED TO HOLD SHORT WHEN GIVEN CLRNC FOR TKOF SO THAT WE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN RUSHED TO COMPLETE THE CHKLIST. THE F/O AND I WOULD ALSO HAVE BEEN ABLE TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE OF OUR LOCATION IF WE HAD TAKEN A LITTLE MORE TIME. AS CAPT, I SHOULD HAVE HAD MORE OF A SITUATIONAL AWARENESS OF THE RWYS AND BEEN MORE ALERT TO THE RELATIVE POS OF MY ACFT AT THE HOLD LINE AND THE TURN REQUIRED TO LINE UP WITH THE CORRECT RWY. ALSO, MORE VIGILANCE IS REQUIRED FOR ROLLING TKOFS DURING NIGHT CONDITIONS.
