Narrative:
Air carrier Y overshot both parallel runways 25R and runway 25L at lax arriving from over smo VOR. Then corrected back to the centerline of 25R for the visibility approach. In doing so cut off air carrier X, causing the captain to level off immediately at about 3000' MSL to prevent from getting any closer than 500' and 1/2 mi. After air carrier Y was aligned with runway 25R, air carrier X made a steeper than normal approach and landed normally on runway 25L at lax. As the first officer and performing the PNF duties, I mentally question why the captain was high and not following the G/south and leveling off. Then seeing the traffic both the captain and I thought the traffic was coming at us head-on. Air carrier Y was actually in a hard right turn overshooting runway 25L and right. Possible lax approach control might be a factor in this event because a widebody transport also was on approach to runway 24 complex parallel to air carrier X, but I was unable to confirm with approach control as to what happened because of a shift change and the new shift at XA30 local did not know about air carrier Y or air carrier X. This situation has made me more vigilant on parallel runway approachs to watch out for the other guy and make damn sure that I always track the runway centerline.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CONFLICT WHEN ACFT ON 25R OVERSHOOTS TURN IN AND ENCROACHES ON 25L TRAFFIC.
Narrative: ACR Y OVERSHOT BOTH PARALLEL RWYS 25R AND RWY 25L AT LAX ARRIVING FROM OVER SMO VOR. THEN CORRECTED BACK TO THE CENTERLINE OF 25R FOR THE VIS APCH. IN DOING SO CUT OFF ACR X, CAUSING THE CAPT TO LEVEL OFF IMMEDIATELY AT ABOUT 3000' MSL TO PREVENT FROM GETTING ANY CLOSER THAN 500' AND 1/2 MI. AFTER ACR Y WAS ALIGNED WITH RWY 25R, ACR X MADE A STEEPER THAN NORMAL APCH AND LANDED NORMALLY ON RWY 25L AT LAX. AS THE F/O AND PERFORMING THE PNF DUTIES, I MENTALLY QUESTION WHY THE CAPT WAS HIGH AND NOT FOLLOWING THE G/S AND LEVELING OFF. THEN SEEING THE TFC BOTH THE CAPT AND I THOUGHT THE TFC WAS COMING AT US HEAD-ON. ACR Y WAS ACTUALLY IN A HARD RIGHT TURN OVERSHOOTING RWY 25L AND R. POSSIBLE LAX APCH CTL MIGHT BE A FACTOR IN THIS EVENT BECAUSE A WDB ALSO WAS ON APCH TO RWY 24 COMPLEX PARALLEL TO ACR X, BUT I WAS UNABLE TO CONFIRM WITH APCH CTL AS TO WHAT HAPPENED BECAUSE OF A SHIFT CHANGE AND THE NEW SHIFT AT XA30 LCL DID NOT KNOW ABOUT ACR Y OR ACR X. THIS SITUATION HAS MADE ME MORE VIGILANT ON PARALLEL RWY APCHS TO WATCH OUT FOR THE OTHER GUY AND MAKE DAMN SURE THAT I ALWAYS TRACK THE RWY CENTERLINE.
