Narrative:
Air carrier airlines, sjc-lax. Lax ATIS information XA56Z winds calm, visibility 4 mi, haze. I was PNF captain. Approximately 7 mi from airport (lax) on a north downwind, we were cleared for a visual runway 24R. First officer stated airport in sight, but was looking at runway 25 complex. We overshot final to about midway between runway 24L and runway 25R. 757 was on final to runway 25L. I assumed control and banked aircraft 45 degrees to correct alignment. Approach control was very helpful throughout. I do not believe visibility was a factor. A mistake made by first officer was complicated by it being difficult for me to see runway. Also, about the time it was easier for me to see runway, approach control called out as traffic air carrier B757 on final to runway 25L. I looked and found aircraft slightly behind us (in distance to runway) and below us. We were also high on the vertical profile.

Title: B737 OVERSHOOTS CTRLINE OF VISUAL RWY ASSIGNMENT CAUSING CONFLICT WITH PARALLEL LNDG TFC.
Narrative: ACR AIRLINES, SJC-LAX. LAX ATIS INFO XA56Z WINDS CALM, VISIBILITY 4 MI, HAZE. I WAS PNF CAPT. APPROX 7 MI FROM ARPT (LAX) ON A N DOWNWIND, WE WERE CLRED FOR A VISUAL RWY 24R. FO STATED ARPT IN SIGHT, BUT WAS LOOKING AT RWY 25 COMPLEX. WE OVERSHOT FINAL TO ABOUT MIDWAY BTWN RWY 24L AND RWY 25R. 757 WAS ON FINAL TO RWY 25L. I ASSUMED CTL AND BANKED ACFT 45 DEGS TO CORRECT ALIGNMENT. APCH CTL WAS VERY HELPFUL THROUGHOUT. I DO NOT BELIEVE VISIBILITY WAS A FACTOR. A MISTAKE MADE BY FO WAS COMPLICATED BY IT BEING DIFFICULT FOR ME TO SEE RWY. ALSO, ABOUT THE TIME IT WAS EASIER FOR ME TO SEE RWY, APCH CTL CALLED OUT AS TFC ACR B757 ON FINAL TO RWY 25L. I LOOKED AND FOUND ACFT SLIGHTLY BEHIND US (IN DISTANCE TO RWY) AND BELOW US. WE WERE ALSO HIGH ON THE VERT PROFILE.
