Narrative:
Lax tower cleared our flight to land on runway 25L. I repeated the word aloud 'left'. The first officer read back in proper fashion to the tower controller 'roger air carrier flight cleared to land 25L.' we noticed at about 500 to 300' afl there was an air carrier jet holding short of runway 25L but well past the 'hold' line. We continued the approach and landing was made west/O having to deviation from normal procedure. Air carrier questioned the tower about being cleared onto the runway while we were cleared to land on same runway. The tower replied that we had been cleared to land on runway 25R. This was an incorrect statement! I, as captain, called tower supervisor or duty via telephone from operations to discuss the incident. I related to him our recollections of the situation and he said the incident was closed as far as he was concerned since no one was jeopardized. I file this report not as a complaint but as a piece of information. We all make mistakes but this one wasn't ours.
