Narrative:
Aircraft landed from stabilized approach, full flaps, 65 KTS (handbook approach speed is 63 KTS). Touched down 3' left of centerline on runway 17 at about 200' from approach end. Aircraft veered to left, full right rudder/nose wheel produced very slow correction, then continued over correction to right. Full braking commenced as aircraft swing through runway heading to the right. Maximum left rudder did not arrest right veer. Aircraft departed runway to the right, xed a drainage ditch, collapsed right main gear. Cause of steering difficulty unknown but several fellow instrs apparently experienced same difficulty in last 2 weeks. Maintenance had thoroughly checked nose gear steering. Aircraft was generally well maintained and fully functional in previous flight same day. Pilot had received cfii/mei in november; part 141 instrument check ride in same model aircraft in january. Student had recently acquired private license in spain with night restriction and was preparing for FAA private pilot check ride to remove night restriction. Power was off throughout incident. Upon departing runway, instrument cut mixture and turned off master. Propeller stopped before airplane halted. Fuel was turned off and all electrics (including mags) secured. I feel that my actions were the best possible. Don't know why this happened or what I could have done to avoid/remedy it. Notified dallas FSDO within an hour of the incident.

Title: STUDENT PLT AND INSTRUCTOR PLT LOST CTL OF GA SMA MAKING A NIGHT LNDG IN CALM WIND. RWY EXCURSION WITH DAMAGE.
Narrative: ACFT LANDED FROM STABILIZED APCH, FULL FLAPS, 65 KTS (HANDBOOK APCH SPD IS 63 KTS). TOUCHED DOWN 3' L OF CTRLINE ON RWY 17 AT ABOUT 200' FROM APCH END. ACFT VEERED TO L, FULL R RUDDER/NOSE WHEEL PRODUCED VERY SLOW CORRECTION, THEN CONTINUED OVER CORRECTION TO R. FULL BRAKING COMMENCED AS ACFT SWING THROUGH RWY HDG TO THE R. MAX LEFT RUDDER DID NOT ARREST R VEER. ACFT DEPARTED RWY TO THE R, XED A DRAINAGE DITCH, COLLAPSED R MAIN GEAR. CAUSE OF STEERING DIFFICULTY UNKNOWN BUT SEVERAL FELLOW INSTRS APPARENTLY EXPERIENCED SAME DIFFICULTY IN LAST 2 WKS. MAINT HAD THOROUGHLY CHKED NOSE GEAR STEERING. ACFT WAS GENERALLY WELL MAINTAINED AND FULLY FUNCTIONAL IN PREVIOUS FLT SAME DAY. PLT HAD RECEIVED CFII/MEI IN NOVEMBER; PART 141 INSTR CHK RIDE IN SAME MODEL ACFT IN JANUARY. STUDENT HAD RECENTLY ACQUIRED PVT LICENSE IN SPAIN WITH NIGHT RESTRICTION AND WAS PREPARING FOR FAA PVT PLT CHK RIDE TO REMOVE NIGHT RESTRICTION. PWR WAS OFF THROUGHOUT INCIDENT. UPON DEPARTING RWY, INSTR CUT MIXTURE AND TURNED OFF MASTER. PROP STOPPED BEFORE AIRPLANE HALTED. FUEL WAS TURNED OFF AND ALL ELECTRICS (INCLUDING MAGS) SECURED. I FEEL THAT MY ACTIONS WERE THE BEST POSSIBLE. DON'T KNOW WHY THIS HAPPENED OR WHAT I COULD HAVE DONE TO AVOID/REMEDY IT. NOTIFIED DALLAS FSDO WITHIN AN HR OF THE INCIDENT.
