Narrative:
[We were] departing runway xx at ZZZ. Advanced the throttles to 40% and selected toga (takeoff go around) to engage auto throttles; throttles started advancing unevenly with the number 1 engine spooling up slower than number 2. At about 70% the number 1 throttle started retarding towards idle and at that time I rejected the takeoff. Speed was approximately 20 - 30 kts.; alerted ATC of the reject and exited the next taxiway. Completed the rejected takeoff (rejected takeoff) check list and decided we should return to the gate and have maintenance look at the engine.
