Narrative:
While on approach to dtw runway 21L, cleared to land inside OM at about 500' we noticed a flashing red light about 1/2 down in center of runway. Told first officer to ask tower if preceeding corporate jet still on runway and to prepare for a go around. Tower responded yes he is and told us to go around. We initiated our go (did not descend less then 200' AGL) and with vectors from approach completed another approach and landing uneventful. Aircraft on runway was a corporate jet, we had heard him talking to tower during our approach and he sounded unfamiliar with airport and wasn't sure which way he wanted to turn off runway. I think he just stopped in middle of runway as he tried to get his bearings and figure out which way to turn off. By tone of tower operators voice (he didn't sound alarmed or excited) I believe he was aware of aircraft on runway and was probably about to send us around west/O our inquiry.

Title: CPR JET DOES NOT CLEAR RWY IN A TIMELY MANNER CAUSING LGT TO GO AROUND.
Narrative: WHILE ON APCH TO DTW RWY 21L, CLRED TO LAND INSIDE OM AT ABOUT 500' WE NOTICED A FLASHING RED LIGHT ABOUT 1/2 DOWN IN CTR OF RWY. TOLD F/O TO ASK TWR IF PRECEEDING CORPORATE JET STILL ON RWY AND TO PREPARE FOR A GAR. TWR RESPONDED YES HE IS AND TOLD US TO GO AROUND. WE INITIATED OUR GO (DID NOT DSND LESS THEN 200' AGL) AND WITH VECTORS FROM APCH COMPLETED ANOTHER APCH AND LNDG UNEVENTFUL. ACFT ON RWY WAS A CORPORATE JET, WE HAD HEARD HIM TALKING TO TWR DURING OUR APCH AND HE SOUNDED UNFAMILIAR WITH ARPT AND WASN'T SURE WHICH WAY HE WANTED TO TURN OFF RWY. I THINK HE JUST STOPPED IN MIDDLE OF RWY AS HE TRIED TO GET HIS BEARINGS AND FIGURE OUT WHICH WAY TO TURN OFF. BY TONE OF TWR OPERATORS VOICE (HE DIDN'T SOUND ALARMED OR EXCITED) I BELIEVE HE WAS AWARE OF ACFT ON RWY AND WAS PROBABLY ABOUT TO SEND US AROUND W/O OUR INQUIRY.
