Narrative:
We departed lax (runway 25R) and at about 1000' AGL I (copilot) saw converging traffic at 1 O'clock. The controller may have called traffic to us but we were very busy. Captain did not see aircraft. The light aircraft appeared to be descending. We leveled at our assigned altitude, 2000', and the traffic passed closely overhead. This situation was threatening. The traffic was very close to us when we had: a high workload time, confign changes/call outs/radio changes los airspeed and low maneuverability. High climb rate/approach attitude resulting in reduced visibility. Recommendations: no takeoff unless no converging traffic at/near shoreline. Traffic advisories given by tower prior to takeoff. Traffic advisories asked for by pilot if no initiative by tower. Note: had we had TCAS ii it would have added another variable, 'traffic, traffic.'
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLT CREW OF WDB ACFT ON TKOF LAX IN INITIAL CLIMB SAW SMA TRAFFIC PASS IN CLOSE PROX.
Narrative: WE DEPARTED LAX (RWY 25R) AND AT ABOUT 1000' AGL I (COPLT) SAW CONVERGING TFC AT 1 O'CLOCK. THE CTLR MAY HAVE CALLED TFC TO US BUT WE WERE VERY BUSY. CAPT DID NOT SEE ACFT. THE LIGHT ACFT APPEARED TO BE DSNDING. WE LEVELED AT OUR ASSIGNED ALT, 2000', AND THE TFC PASSED CLOSELY OVERHEAD. THIS SITUATION WAS THREATENING. THE TFC WAS VERY CLOSE TO US WHEN WE HAD: A HIGH WORKLOAD TIME, CONFIGN CHANGES/CALL OUTS/RADIO CHANGES LOS AIRSPD AND LOW MANEUVERABILITY. HIGH CLB RATE/APCH ATTITUDE RESULTING IN REDUCED VISIBILITY. RECOMMENDATIONS: NO TKOF UNLESS NO CONVERGING TFC AT/NEAR SHORELINE. TFC ADVISORIES GIVEN BY TWR PRIOR TO TKOF. TFC ADVISORIES ASKED FOR BY PLT IF NO INITIATIVE BY TWR. NOTE: HAD WE HAD TCAS II IT WOULD HAVE ADDED ANOTHER VARIABLE, 'TFC, TFC.'
