Narrative:

As we began our level-off at 6000', advised us of conflicting traffic at 1 O'clock and 5 mi headed nebnd opp direction. They also said altitude indicated 5600'. We looked for the traffic, but were unable to spot it. The winds were very strong out of the west, so traffic was probably over in the 11:30-12:30 range. No further traffic calls were made and about 1 min later the first officer abruptly asked me if I had seen that. I said, 'no,' and he went on to say that the other aircraft had barely missed us by 150' or so. We often are advised of traffic down at 1200' and way above us, but for some reason, the controller didn't tell us about traffic, indicating an altitude within 400' of ours and on a direct collision course. Traffic advisories are often not very helpful because many aircraft don't have mode C capability; but, those that have the altitude readout and are within 1000' of our assigned altitude are very important to us. Many times, center controllers will advise us of traffic (IFR) after it has passed across our nose and is no longer a factor.

Narrative: AS WE BEGAN OUR LEVEL-OFF AT 6000', ADVISED US OF CONFLICTING TFC AT 1 O'CLOCK AND 5 MI HEADED NEBND OPP DIRECTION. THEY ALSO SAID ALT INDICATED 5600'. WE LOOKED FOR THE TFC, BUT WERE UNABLE TO SPOT IT. THE WINDS WERE VERY STRONG OUT OF THE W, SO TFC WAS PROBABLY OVER IN THE 11:30-12:30 RANGE. NO FURTHER TFC CALLS WERE MADE AND ABOUT 1 MIN LATER THE F/O ABRUPTLY ASKED ME IF I HAD SEEN THAT. I SAID, 'NO,' AND HE WENT ON TO SAY THAT THE OTHER ACFT HAD BARELY MISSED US BY 150' OR SO. WE OFTEN ARE ADVISED OF TFC DOWN AT 1200' AND WAY ABOVE US, BUT FOR SOME REASON, THE CTLR DIDN'T TELL US ABOUT TFC, INDICATING AN ALT WITHIN 400' OF OURS AND ON A DIRECT COLLISION COURSE. TFC ADVISORIES ARE OFTEN NOT VERY HELPFUL BECAUSE MANY ACFT DON'T HAVE MODE C CAPABILITY; BUT, THOSE THAT HAVE THE ALT READOUT AND ARE WITHIN 1000' OF OUR ASSIGNED ALT ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO US. MANY TIMES, CENTER CTLRS WILL ADVISE US OF TFC (IFR) AFTER IT HAS PASSED ACROSS OUR NOSE AND IS NO LONGER A FACTOR.
