Narrative:
Approximately 4 mins after takeoff, I noticed that the aircraft was not climbing at the proper rate. On checking the engines, I saw that the #2 engine throttle was set at the correct position, but the engine INS were indicating the engine was running at a sub-idle level with very low RPM's, egt and fuel flow. I notified iah departure control that we had an engine failure and would return for landing. We accomplished a precautionary engine shutdown and completed all required checklists. I briefed the F/a's to prepare the cabin for a precautionary emergency landing. The landing was completely uneventful. This post-takeoff emergency became practically a non-event due to the training and proficiency of the entire crew; the professional conduct of the iah departure, approach and tower controllers; and the benign nature of the engine failure.

Title: LGT HAS ENGINE FAILURE SHORTLY AFTER TKOF.
Narrative: APPROX 4 MINS AFTER TKOF, I NOTICED THAT THE ACFT WAS NOT CLBING AT THE PROPER RATE. ON CHKING THE ENGS, I SAW THAT THE #2 ENG THROTTLE WAS SET AT THE CORRECT POS, BUT THE ENG INS WERE INDICATING THE ENG WAS RUNNING AT A SUB-IDLE LEVEL WITH VERY LOW RPM'S, EGT AND FUEL FLOW. I NOTIFIED IAH DEP CTL THAT WE HAD AN ENG FAILURE AND WOULD RETURN FOR LNDG. WE ACCOMPLISHED A PRECAUTIONARY ENG SHUTDOWN AND COMPLETED ALL REQUIRED CHKLISTS. I BRIEFED THE F/A'S TO PREPARE THE CABIN FOR A PRECAUTIONARY EMER LNDG. THE LNDG WAS COMPLETELY UNEVENTFUL. THIS POST-TKOF EMER BECAME PRACTICALLY A NON-EVENT DUE TO THE TRNING AND PROFICIENCY OF THE ENTIRE CREW; THE PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT OF THE IAH DEP, APCH AND TWR CTLRS; AND THE BENIGN NATURE OF THE ENG FAILURE.
