Narrative:
On takeoff, first officer flying, noticed loud vibration and thumping noise at time of gear retraction. Noticed #2 engine N1, N2, and EPR decaying and also fluctuating. Asked for straight ahead climb, cleaned up aircraft and climbed to 2000 MSL. Declared emergency, and shut down #2 engine via procedure. Made uneventful single engine landing (first officer) and turned off at end of runway 36L. Noticed grass fire off runway (east of runway). After ensuring no fire or smoke from engine via crash crew, taxied to gate. Tires all ok, evident turbine damage #2 engine. Felt allowing first officer to fly entire pattern was a good idea in that he flew the aircraft extremely well, and it gave me time to monitor the 'big picture' throughout the event. Supplemental information from acn 204144: initial takeoff, medium large transport series aircraft, 146000 pounds. At 100 ft AGL, #2 engine catastrophic failure. All abnormal procedures accomplished. Uneventful return and landing at tampa.

Title: ENG FAILURE DURING TKOF ON AN MLG ACR ACFT.
Narrative: ON TKOF, FO FLYING, NOTICED LOUD VIBRATION AND THUMPING NOISE AT TIME OF GEAR RETRACTION. NOTICED #2 ENG N1, N2, AND EPR DECAYING AND ALSO FLUCTUATING. ASKED FOR STRAIGHT AHEAD CLB, CLEANED UP ACFT AND CLBED TO 2000 MSL. DECLARED EMER, AND SHUT DOWN #2 ENG VIA PROC. MADE UNEVENTFUL SINGLE ENG LNDG (FO) AND TURNED OFF AT END OF RWY 36L. NOTICED GRASS FIRE OFF RWY (E OF RWY). AFTER ENSURING NO FIRE OR SMOKE FROM ENG VIA CRASH CREW, TAXIED TO GATE. TIRES ALL OK, EVIDENT TURBINE DAMAGE #2 ENG. FELT ALLOWING FO TO FLY ENTIRE PATTERN WAS A GOOD IDEA IN THAT HE FLEW THE ACFT EXTREMELY WELL, AND IT GAVE ME TIME TO MONITOR THE 'BIG PICTURE' THROUGHOUT THE EVENT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 204144: INITIAL TKOF, MLG SERIES ACFT, 146000 POUNDS. AT 100 FT AGL, #2 ENG CATASTROPHIC FAILURE. ALL ABNORMAL PROCS ACCOMPLISHED. UNEVENTFUL RETURN AND LNDG AT TAMPA.
