Narrative:
While cruising at 8000' in the area of quite a few cumulus clouds, we had a TCAS advisory of 'traffic.' we noted the traffic on the TCAS display of 12 O'clock and 500' below us. We looked for traffic but no joy. As the opp direction traffic came closer, we got an RA of, 'monitor V/south.' then we got an RA of, 'climb.' we climbed 500' to 8500'. We notified approach of the deviation and that such deviation was due to TCAS RA. He then told us that it had been a VFR aircraft that he was talking to, and that our deviation had been strictly our choice. We again advised him that we had gotten an RA, had no visibility contact with traffic and he had never advised us of traffic. He stated he was going to make a note of our deviation.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: TCAS RA CAUSED FLT CREW TO CLIMB 500' TO 8500' TO CLEAR TRAFFIC. APCH CTLR LATER SAID HE WAS TALKING TO A VFR FLT AND EVASIVE ACTION WAS STRICTLY FLT CREW OPTION.
Narrative: WHILE CRUISING AT 8000' IN THE AREA OF QUITE A FEW CUMULUS CLOUDS, WE HAD A TCAS ADVISORY OF 'TFC.' WE NOTED THE TFC ON THE TCAS DISPLAY OF 12 O'CLOCK AND 500' BELOW US. WE LOOKED FOR TFC BUT NO JOY. AS THE OPP DIRECTION TFC CAME CLOSER, WE GOT AN RA OF, 'MONITOR V/S.' THEN WE GOT AN RA OF, 'CLB.' WE CLBED 500' TO 8500'. WE NOTIFIED APCH OF THE DEVIATION AND THAT SUCH DEVIATION WAS DUE TO TCAS RA. HE THEN TOLD US THAT IT HAD BEEN A VFR ACFT THAT HE WAS TALKING TO, AND THAT OUR DEVIATION HAD BEEN STRICTLY OUR CHOICE. WE AGAIN ADVISED HIM THAT WE HAD GOTTEN AN RA, HAD NO VIS CONTACT WITH TFC AND HE HAD NEVER ADVISED US OF TFC. HE STATED HE WAS GOING TO MAKE A NOTE OF OUR DEVIATION.
