Narrative:
Departing dfw was stepped climbed to 7000'. We were then climbed to 15000'. I observed the first officer keying the microphone to answer the call. I didn't hear the transmitted reply, but that isn't unusual in this fleet of aircraft. I set the altitude in the altitude reminder and initiated the climb. There wasn't any discussion as to what our actions were, indicating complete agreement of our actions and what we heard. Climbing through 7900', we were given an immediate turn, 15 degrees right, and a descent to 7000', which we complied with. At no time did we ever see the other aircraft. Chain of events: it was a normal flight, actions that each of us have accomplished thousands of times in our flying experience. It occurred on the second day of a 4 day trip. Rest consisted of off-duty on fri at PM20 hours, at the hotel by PM00 hours and nin bed by PM00. We each had an AM30 wake-up call with approximately 5 1/2-6 hours sleep. Neither of us felt well-rested the next morning. There were 2 other aircraft on the frequency at the same time, one of which was given clearance to 15000' at the same time that our infraction occurred, the other being company air carrier. While in this instance the call signs are different, abc vs xyz, there are times when the call signs are similar. In retrospect and in the future, all clrncs should be read back and verified by both pilots, no matter how positive your beliefs.
