Narrative:

Taxied hangar east to runway 34 via H taxiway to hold short runway 34. As reaching hold point, ground cleared to backtrack into position runway 34. First officer saw and radioed ground control and air carrier medium large transport was starting a takeoff roll. We held short. Next tower repeated backtrack instructions and told us to go to tower. We read back. Well down the runway, tower indicated we were supposed to have crossed runway 34 to runway 29 to taxi east. An small aircraft on final started a 360 degree turn and we were cleared for takeoff. I called via landline at destination to clarify incident. Controller said it was a 'miscom,' and considered the matter closed. I felt there was some miscoord in the cabin at trying to put us on a runway with an medium large transport about to roll and whatever ensuing instructions kept the controller from correcting or amending our readback. We did what we thought we were cleared to do.

Title: GND CTLR CLEARED ACFT ON RWY WHILE MLG IN TKOF ROLL. LCL ALSO HAD SMA ON FINAL. APPARENT COORD BREAKDOWN IN TWR.

Narrative: TAXIED HANGAR E TO RWY 34 VIA H TXWY TO HOLD SHORT RWY 34. AS REACHING HOLD POINT, GND CLRED TO BACKTRACK INTO POS RWY 34. F/O SAW AND RADIOED GND CTL AND ACR MLG WAS STARTING A TKOF ROLL. WE HELD SHORT. NEXT TWR REPEATED BACKTRACK INSTRUCTIONS AND TOLD US TO GO TO TWR. WE READ BACK. WELL DOWN THE RWY, TWR INDICATED WE WERE SUPPOSED TO HAVE CROSSED RWY 34 TO RWY 29 TO TAXI E. AN SMA ON FINAL STARTED A 360 DEG TURN AND WE WERE CLRED FOR TKOF. I CALLED VIA LANDLINE AT DEST TO CLARIFY INCIDENT. CTLR SAID IT WAS A 'MISCOM,' AND CONSIDERED THE MATTER CLOSED. I FELT THERE WAS SOME MISCOORD IN THE CABIN AT TRYING TO PUT US ON A RWY WITH AN MLG ABOUT TO ROLL AND WHATEVER ENSUING INSTRUCTIONS KEPT THE CTLR FROM CORRECTING OR AMENDING OUR READBACK. WE DID WHAT WE THOUGHT WE WERE CLRED TO DO.
