Narrative:
Engine started to run rough on base leg. I switched fuel and thought I would still make airport. It then looked doubtful if I would make it over fence and ditch. I pulled off power and landed, but hit hard and damaged aircraft. I should have landed as soon as engine started to run rough. The grass crosswind runway at airport was closed due to wet conditions and the field below me looked like it was disked and I thought it would be soft and I would nose over. It was a good place to land and if I had made a good approach I should have made a good landing with no trouble. Aircraft was equipped with lake injector and no carburetor heat. Heat should be add to engine when it is repaired. My medical had expired in 1/91. I don't believe this had any effect an accident and will be getting another medical as soon as I can get an appointment.
