Narrative:

En route between phl and swf level at 4000' MSL. We were 20 mi west of swf proceeding direct neely LOM when ny advised traffic at 12 O'clock and 5 mi, altitude unknown. I picked up traffic at about 1 mi coming toward us, 200-300' above us. The traffic was a sailplane soaring over middletown, ny (randall airport). I turned right and initiated a descent to give more clearance between us. I told ATC that traffic went by us 200-300' above us and that it was a sailplane. It would be nice if sailplanes had xponders required so at least ATC would know what altitude they are at.
